Collection Description

Selections from The La Torre Collection, Special Collections of the Lloyd Sealy Library, John Jay College. This collection contained documents related to extensive NYPD investigation into the unsolved 1952 murder of Arnold Schuster. The investigation was active throughout the 1950s: more than 300 detectives worked on the case and nearly 4,000 individuals were interrrogated.

Arnold Schuster was a 24 year old clothing salesman who happened to be riding the New York subway when he spotted a notorious bank robber  Willie Sutton. Schuster notified  police of his whereabouts and Sutton was apprehended. After the story was publicized, Schuster was found murdered not far from his home on March 8, 1952.
