Collection Description
On February 20, 1962 John Glenn became the first astronaut to orbit the earth on spacecraft Friendship 7. The celebration of this achievement was manifested in a Ticker Tape Parade for Lt. Con. Glenn a few weeks later March 1, 1962. The day was declared ‘Astronaut Day’ in NYC and many NYrs took off work and school to crowd into downtown Broadway “Canyon of Heroes” to be part of this event.
These are selections from the collected documents from the NYPD Tactical Police Force Division that protected Lt. Con. Glenn and his party. The party included fellow astronauts and NASA scientists that supported the Friendship 7 flight. See also the finding aid to this collection.
