Description
"Two comparative studies are included in this report.
The first study is based on official Uniform Crime Reporting statistics for selected crimes, grouped into census age categories. Data is not available for calendar year 1995 at the time of publication of this report. The second study is based on a special computer run which identifies all arrests for crimes in which firearms are involved. This data is not available for the years prior to 1989" - Statistical Note.
"The youth population of New York City declined by 25% from 1970 to 1990. The New York City Department of City Planning's population projections for the year 2000 forecast an increase of 5% in the youth population. Unfortunately, the decline in youth population has outpaced any reduction in arrest activity. Arrest rates per capita, particularly for violent crimes, have increased. However, the proportions of youths aged 7-19 arrested for a crime involving a firearm has declined from 30.7% in 1989 to 24.7% in 1995. This suggests that the youth participation rates in crimes involving firearms has decreased from 1989 to 1995"--Executive Summary
